Chicago Bauhaus & Beyond Road Trip
Modernism Weekend In Springfield
July 19 & 20

Hosted by Anthony Rubano

Join CBB for an insiders tour of modernism in our state capitol. To keep down costs, attendees will arrange their own travel rather than share a bus. Some parts of the tour will be optional.

We will meet at our hotel, the State House Inn, 1960, a local modernist landmark.  www.thestatehouseinn.com/  We have a special group rate of $88 for a standard guest room, and $109.99 for a deluxe suite. Rate includes buffet breakfast and a free drink at the bar. We have reserved a block of rooms that will be held only until June 19. Call 217-528-5100 to make your reservation and tell them you are with the Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond Tour. Springfield is approx. 3 hours from Chicago, taking I55 South. Our tour will leave the State House Inn promptly at 1:00 p.m. That should give everyone enough time to arrive and eat lunch on their own.

From there, we will visit modernist buildings and homes chosen by Anthony Rubano including The Garvey House by John Benya (1956-8), Simmons House by Robert Buckles (1956) , Henderson House by Robert Buckles, Horace Mann Building by Minoru Yamasaki with fantastic original landscape (1968-74), Illinois National Bank Building by SOM (1972). The day will conclude with a cocktail party at the fabulous 1956 home (designed by Robert Buckles) of our host. An optional dinner will be planned for those of the group who choose to attend.

Anthony Rubano is a project designer with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, a noted educator, curator and lecturer, and member of Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond. The tour is co-organized by Katharine Keleman, architectural historian and curator, and Joan Gand, vice-president of Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond.

Sunday morning, following a hot buffet breakfast at the hotel we may include a few more stops, TBA, and you will have a chance to visit other destinations on your own. Suggestions include the Dana Thomas House (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1904), which is open from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and the Lincoln Memorial Gardens (Jens Jensen, 1936). (www.dana-thomas.org/tours.htm)
