BAUHAUS TO CHICAGO

An exhibition of Paintings, Sculpture, Drawings, Prints,
Photographs, Publications, Decorative Arts, Furniture
Works by Teachers and Students
Bauhaus / New Bauhaus / Institute of Design
Architecture Department IIT
Chicago Artists and Architects

The exhibit is beautifully displayed in their home, the 1951 Irving Levin House, a mid-century modern residence by architect Carter H. Manny Jr . Manny was a graduate of Harvard University, apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West in 1946 and received his architecture degree from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1948. He practiced architecture with C.F. Murphy Associates, Chicago (now Murphy/Jahn) from 1948 to 1983. Mr. Manny has been associated with the Graham Foundation since its inception, first as a trustee, 1956 to 1974, then the Acting Director, 1971 to 1974, and finally the Director, 1974 to 1993.

The Levin house features walls of glass and brick, several courtyards, and was originally landscaped by Alfred Caldwell. Paul and Margaret have taken on the challenge to restore the home and landscape to the original design.
Refreshments will be served.

Other Events of Interest to our members:

Please pencil in your calendars Saturday, September 15 when an open house will be held at the Gordon Bunshaft (SOM) designed Hostess House, Building #42, at Great Lakes Naval Base, with which Landmarks Illinois has been involved for almost two years as a consulting party to a Section 106 process.

You all may recall, this is one of two mid-century, SOM designed buildings that the Navy had wanted to demolish. Landmarks Illinois, in a consulting party status, brought in architect John Vinci to do a reuse study for the building, which successfully convinced the Great Lakes Naval Museum to ask the Navy to turn the building over to them to use as a new museum building.

The museum is in its fundraising mode and the open house will give the public the opportunity to see the building, and to understand the financial challenge ahead to renovate it back to its original exterior design and transform the interior into a naval history museum.

Registration info will be available soon - contact Landmarks Illinois at 312-922-1742 for more information

Rare Opportunity to Tour Landmark Modern School

On Sunday, September 16, docents will lead tours of Crow Island School in Winnetka. Designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen with Perkins, Wheeler & Will, the elementary school opened in 1940 and has been in continuous use ever since. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990 for its architectural significance and influence on subsequent school design. Built as an expression of “philosophy in brick,” Crow Island was designed for developmental education that emphasizes hands-on learning. The classrooms, each with an outdoor courtyard, are laid out in wings that pinwheel from the central core.
