Summer Modernism Tour

Summer Tour
Barrington Modernism
Tour of Homes by Weese, Dart,
Erickson, and Wright
Sunday, August 5, 1:00 p.m.

Join us for an architecture tour of the fabulous modern homes of Barrington. Many of the modern architects we study chose Barrington for their own homes. You’ll see why when we visit the original homes of Harry Weese (1957), Edward Dart (1965), and Don Erickson (1967). We will also enjoy a visit to the Carl Post residence, a rare pre-fab by Frank Lloyd Wright (1957), and the Welch house by Harry Weese (1952).

We will finish the tour at the Harry Weese home and studio for an outdoor cocktail party.

The Don Erickson home in Barrington will be on the tour
The Weese and Dart homes are located in a beautiful wooded area of Barrington Hills on a 50-acre lake, where Dart, Weese, and others have built beautiful modernist homes on large parcels of land. The Dart home won an AIA award, and features a multi-level design with barn-inspired post and beams. The Weese home, published in book and magazines ranging from LIFE to Architectural Record, has been photographed for our upcoming Chicago Modernism book by Julius Shulman. This experimental house was the Weese family’s weekend and summer retreat and includes Harry’s sky- lit drafting studio.  The Erickson house was the home of the architect of Indian Lakes Resort, that we visited last June. Mr. Erickson passed away at the end of 2006. The Welch house, designed for Harry’s sister,  is featured in the Harry Weese book. The Wright house is one of the pre-fab houses that the architect designed for pre-fab home builder Marshall Erdman.

Ticket/Donation: $35 for CBB members and $40 for guest.
The tour is open to CBB members in good standing. Each member may register one guest. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
