CBB Declares April Modernism Month in Chicago!

Celebrate Spring at 3 Modernism Events:

Open House Party at a Modern Masterpiece in Glenview
"Friendraiser" - Bring a Friend!

Sunday, April 1     2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Tour and enjoy a magnificent 1958 "Case Study" style house, designed by James Henneberg and featured in House & Garden magazine in 1960. The one-owner home and its furnishings look much as they did back then, featuring classic modern furniture and art. The post and beam home features a sunken living room, walls of glass, a reflecting pond, original St. Charles kitchen with floating cabinets, wet bar, and the list just keeps on going. This home is currently for sale, and this is a unique chance to see it now with all the original furnishings just as the owner and architect intended. The event is hosted by the listing agent, Maureen Morey of Koenig and Strey and CBB’s Joe Kunkel, buyers agent, of Baird and Warner. Refreshments will be served.

This event is FREE to CBB members in good standing, and one guest each.
Bring a guest that might be interested in joining CBB so they can get acquainted with our organization.
You must pre-register for this event, by emailing back to Joan or Call Joe at 312-371-0986.

Chicago Modernism Show - CBB Event:
Where Mies Met Wright:  Chicagoland Modernist Houses
Sunday, April 15     2:00 p.m.
Slideshow Talk by Joe Kunkel, Realtor and CBB President
and Discussion with a Panel of Distinguished Modernists

The Chicago area is world-famous for architecture, but have you realized that Chicago is unique as the place of convergence? Chicago is the birthplace of Modernism where solutions from different ideological approaches blended, evolving to a diverse mix of unique local modernist styles, incorporating and juxtaposing materials and philosophies of the Bauhaus and Prairie styles.  Find out who our creative modern architects were and why their important houses are exploratory works of art worthy of preservation, and learn about the feature book CBB is working to publish with fantastic photos by Julius Shulman. Discover why these houses are wonderful retreats in which to live in tune with nature. Enjoy an informative and entertaining look at work by notable architects including Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, A. James Speyer, Edward Dart, A. Quincy Jones, Dennis Blair, E. Fay Jones, Keck and Keck, Edward Humrich, and many others, covering Chicago and its many suburbs.

Held at PAULINE GRACE furniture showroom, adjacent to the Chicago Modernism Show.
FREE with admission to Modernism Show;  Donation to CBB is encouraged at the door.

Spring Tour
Planned Modern Communities:
Keck and Wright Subdivisions in Glencoe
Sunday, April 29, 2:00 p.m.

Architecture Tour of planned subdivisions by architects Keck and Keck, and Frank Lloyd Wright - Glencoe. Keck homes in Forest Crest, plus Wright Ravine Bluffs area with cocktails at the Frank Lloyd Wright Booth House.

Keck and Keck home in Forest Crest
Join us as we compare and contrast two architect-designed subdivisions, both in Glencoe. The first, designed and built in the early 1950s, is Harold Friedmans Forest Crest Subdivision, a 9 1/2 acre parcel of land divided into 22 lots featuring houses all by the architecture firm of Keck and Keck. The Kecks provided five plans for Friedman, who created variety with siting variations, flip-flopping, and color choices. All have vertical cedar siding, brick fireplaces, skylights, and the trademark Keck louvers for ventilation. Although there have been several tear-downs recently, the majority of the homes still stand and are greatly appreciated by their owners. We originally visited this area on our 2005 Keck and Keck tour, and this time we will be going to at least 6 different homes not included on that tour, including several still lived in by the original owners. We will also revisit members Barb and Scott Padiak who had just moved in at the time of the 2005 tour, have done a tasteful renovation, and are volunteering their time to organize this tour.

After touring the homes and enjoying this beautifully planned neighborhood, we will walk or drive over to the Frank Lloyd Wright Ravine Bluffs subdivision, created 50 years earlier, located right across the railroad tracks. This area features the only bridge designed by Wright, (on the National Register of Historic Places) as well as six Wright-designed houses, which we will view from the outside.  We will end our tour at the beautiful 4-story Booth House (1915) owned by one of our members who is graciously opening it for our reception and party at the end of the tour. The Booth house is a significant Wright design featuring Mondrian-like dark trim dividing lightly colored planes into geometrical relationships. The square motif continues throughout the house, even down to the door knobs.

Ticket/Donation: $35 for CBB members and $40 for guest.
Tour is open to CBB members in good standing, each member may register one guest. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

SPACE IS LIMITED: Reservations will be held for paid tickets only. If your payment arrives after the tour is sold out, we will notify you and return your payment.
