OUR NEXT EVENT!
Sunday, July 30 - 2:00 p.m.
Northside Chicago Modernism
$15 members/$20 guests

Our next event be a tour of several mid-century homes in the Budlong Woods area of Chicago. The tour includes the 1949 Keck and Keck home that was updated in 2004 by an energetic young couple, now CBB members. The home was in the press recently in the Chicago Tribune article on renovating ranch houses, (Ranch Dressing, June 23, 2006) and also previously featured in Crain’s Chicago Business in the real estate section.

Discover Budlong Woods, a gem of a neighborhood where leafy trees and lawns surround post-war houses that have survived in tact. Budlong Woods is part of the Lincoln Square community that includes Bowmanville, Ravenswood, Ravenswood Gardens and Lincoln Square. On the quiet, northwest side of Chicago, the boundaries of Budlong Woods are Bryn Mawr, Foster, Western and the Chicago River.

With home prices skyrocketing in lakefront and more crowded neighborhoods, many urban dwellers move to Budlong Woods to get the best of both worlds - city access, plus suburban living. The well-kept housing in Budlong Woods is predominately two-flats, frame cottages and brick bungalows, many with enviably large yards. Dotted among them are many mid-century gems waiting to be discovered!

We will tour several homes in the area and then finish our tour with a cocktail party at the Keck and Keck home, which also has a beautiful, large yard with flagstone patio and prairie gardens.

Tickets are $15 for CBB members and $20 for guests. You can sign up on our website on the Calendar page, pay by credit card (paypal), or mail a check to the CBB P.O. box with the names of the attendees enclosed.

Riverwoods Edward Humrich "Plus" Tour

This event will celebrate the architecture of Edward Humrich, a prairie modernist who designed and built 40 houses in the village of Riverwoods - a Northern suburb just West of Deerfield. Riverwoods contains one of the largest suburban collections of mid-century architecture from the 1950’s and 60’s.  In addition to touring several Humrich houses, we will tour the newly renovated home featured in the Chicago Tribune’s "Ranch Dressing" article belonging to CBB members, plus houses by Keck and Keck and others in the area.

Our special guest for this event will be Lisa DiChiera, Director of Advocacy, Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois, who will speak about the how-to’s of preservation for homeowners.

Glencoe Plan Commission
Vote tied - Dart house in limbo
A threatened Edward Dart house in Glencoe is slated to be demolished to make way for two new houses if the Plan Commission approves rezoning of the property into two one-acre lots.  It is located on prime property at 35 Estate Dr. in Glencoe on the bluffs. The large and spectacular house was built for Louis Ancel, who ironically, at one time was on the planning commission. Neighbors along the bluffs are banding together to fight demolition/rezoning.

CBB members attending the meeting, and president Joe Kunkel wrote an official letter in favor of preserving the home. Coordinated with efforts from all the local preservation organizations, we made a strong stand. There will be a future meeting scheduled to review the situation after more information is gathered.
