Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond NEWS Urgent News Alert - Glencoe Plan Commission Meeting this Tuesday Please attend if you can A threatened Edward Dart house in Glencoe is slated to be demolished to make way for two new houses if the Plan Commission approves rezoning of the property into two one-acre lots. It is located on prime property at 35 Estate Dr. in Glencoe on the bluffs. The large and spectacular house was built for Louis Ancel, who ironically, at one time was on the planning commission. Neighbors along the bluffs are banding together to fight demolition/rezoning but they need our help! The Plan Commission meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27 in the Village Board chambers (2nd Floor) of the Glencoe Village Hall, 675 Village Court (on Green Bay Road just south of Park Avenue). This is the second item on the agenda, following approval of our last meeting’s minutes, so we will likely be addressing this issue almost immediately upon convening the meeting. If you cannot attend, Email letters to Ed Goodale, Glencoe Historic Preservation Chairman egoodale@sbcglobal.net Also see today’s Crains - Letters to the Editor by V.P. Gary Gand mentioning this house and others "Ranch Dressing" in the Chicago Tribune Friday Friday’s Tribune featured a great article in the "Your Space" section on renovating ranch houses. The article featured two homes of CBB members, plus two others, and included quotes from Joan Gand, Vice-President and Joe Kunkel, President of CBB. If you missed the article, the text is available on the Tribune website, and will soon be included on our own web page as well. Plans are in the works to tour some of the homes in the article, stay tuned for dates and times coming soon. http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/realestate/yourplace DON’T FORGET - Top 10 Most Endangered Modern Buildings - we need your input! The home and studio were designed and built in 1938 on 7 1/2 acres of land with the gardens designed by noted Landscape Architect Franz Lipp. The home has been kept in original condition by its second owners, Chicago-area artist, Martyl and her husband, Physicist Alexander Langsdorf (deceased) Martyl’s own collection of art and furniture features many mid-century masterpieces. Our tour was led by Architect Jeff Whyte. Everyone agreed that it was a fantastic experience to see this beautiful modern prairie masterpiece that has been kept in pristine original condition. The house was built out of unsealed redwood and is all still original! This tour was planned by Joan Gand, and the comprehensive handout was prepared by Joe Kunkel. Indian Lakes Resort, Bloomingdale Then, we toured the Indian Lakes Resort, designed by Don Erickson, a student and apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright, which first opened in 1980. The resort was designed on a hexagonal motif, which is repeated in the ceilings, floors, walls - everywhere. The three-story waterfall, “The Cave” bar in the atrium and the conference center’s giant conversation pit with hanging fireplace, were restored in the $20 million rehab done in 2000. CBB member Barb Padiak led our tours. Barb did her research prior to the event by touring the resort with manager John Callan, and then visiting architect Don Erickson in his home to hear the story of how the resort was designed right from the source. What an incredible experience! Many of us stayed and enjoyed cocktails at the Cave Bar, a lava-rock structure built underneath the atrium waterfalls. See our new link to Don Erickwson on the "Mission" page of the CBB website, and you can also follow a link to another article that has photos of other works by Mr. Erickson. This tour was suggested by Dan Obermaier, planned by Joan Gand and Barb Padiak Elmhurst Art Museum Outdoor Modern Event featuring furniture designer Richard Schultz The Elmhurst Art Museum hosted a lecture by furniture designer Richard Schultz on June 16, that we had mentioned in the previous newsletters and on our website. They got an excellend turnout, including many CBB members, to see an informativel lecture by Richard Schultz and his son Peter, as well as a talk on Modernism in landscape design. Richard Schultz talked of his education at the Institute of Design, where he was a classmate of CBB member Allen Porter. The Elmhurst museum has the unique distinction of "containing" the McCormick House, designed in 1951-52 by Mies van der Rohe. One of only three private residences designed by the master of Modernism, the McCormick house was moved to Wilder Park in Elmhurst in 1993, where it became the cornerstone for the new museum. Architect DeStefano Partners incorporated the classic design with the new museum facility. The result is an elegant glass and steel building that integrates so well with the home - a great example of preservation. CBB Website Update! Be sure to check out the "Mission" page of the CBB website for new links to biographies and information on each subject. We invite members to submit any information they can provide so that the CBB website can be the "Wikipedia" of Modernism. Joan Gand Vice-President Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond P.O.
