Richard will detail the impact and legacy of his classic 1966 Collection, which was originally commissioned by Florence Knoll of Knoll and Associates and is a part of the Permanent Collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Knoll and Associates, along with Herman Miller, was a pioneer in designing, manufacturing and marketing modern furniture to post World War II America and produced furniture created by notable designers Harry Bertoia, Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen. The 1966 Collection of outdoor furniture is still a standard of mid-20th century modern design and has influenced the visual impact of outdoor living spaces over the last four decades. The evening’s outdoor focus will continue with a presentation by landscape architect Scott Mehaffey, formerly Landscape Architect for The Morton Arboretum and now Design Manager for Craig Bergmann Landscape Design in Wilmette. Scott will discuss how the modern style of landscape design, prevalent in California during the mid-20th century, was adapted to the needs and specifications of the mid-western house and garden. Scott has written for Chicagoland Gardening, Garden Design, Landscape Architecture, and The Public Garden magazines, and has designed or restored several prominent gardens in the Chicagoland area. Light refreshments will be served. For reservations and more information, call Stephanie Grow at (630) 834-0202, x10. Reservations are required. Cost: $15 for EAM members/$20.00 for non-members. Welcome to New Members from the Chicago Modernism Show The Third Annual Chicago Modernism Show, held April 7-9, highlighted vintage 20th Century furniture, fine arts and decorative arts from 1900-1970. Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond participated by exhibiting in our booth as well as sponsoring a lecture about American designer Russel Wright. The Chicago Art Deco Society presented a lecture on Miami’s preservation of Deco architecture on the following Monday. The Architecture and Design Society of the Art Institute gave a fabulous pre-show preview party. Everyone worked together with Dolphin Promotions, show promoters, to create this great weekend to celebrate and preserve Modernism! And, last but not least, we signed up a record number of new members. Thanks to: Richard Wright, co-sponsor; Scott Vermillion, RW event coordinator, Joe Loundy of CADS, Gary Gand, Gand Music and Sound for the donation of sound system and tech work, Ron Steinberg, Rentcom for the donation of rental of a special Xenon slide projector and screen, and all of the volunteers who helped make it all possible.
