Here is a recap for those who couldn’t attend: The meeting was held at the beautiful facility of the Chicago Architecture Foundation, in the historic SantaFe building in Chicago. As a note of trivia, this building is located right at the "end" of Route 66. We would like to thank our hosts at CAF for providing the perfect space for our needs, as well as their hospitality. Approximately 50 members attended. Introduction - Joe Kunkel, President Joe gave an introduction to the meeting by highlighting our accomplishments for the last two years. I think we were all overwhelmed at how much we have actually done in that short time period. Since our formation in February of 2004 as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, we have created a website (done by Joe), an award-winning logo (by Allen Porter), built a membership of over 300, created an email newsletter (done by Joan) and created numerous well-attended events including symposiums, house tours, and gallery talks. A special segment on the 10:00 news, ABC TV Channel 7, "Modern Masterpieces," created by CBB member and ABC special reporter Kevin Roy reached millions of people. If you missed this, or would like to see it again, you can view it on our website at: http://www.chicagobauhausbeyond.org/news.htm (scroll down to Modern Masterpieces) Joe announced the appointment of our new Treasurer Kathy Deane, a CPA with great experience in non-profit work, who will be a huge asset to the board. Kathy then gave a short talk about the finances of CBB, which are now reorganized into complete spreadsheets and accounting for each event. Our bookkeeping complies with all state and federal regulations for 501(c)3 non-profit corporations. Next, our guest speaker, Anthony Rubano, from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, gave his talk,"Through the Picture Window: Postwar Suburban Housing." Anthony’s talk was incredibly fun, informational and inspiring. His images covered housing from the Cape Cod Style, the ranchhouse, and the split-level, and showed where Modernism (with a capital M) fit into the big picture. Along with the photos of homes, he included original advertisements for subdivisions, clips from magazines, and it was a treat for us all. After a short break, Joan Gand, Vice-President, lead an interactive discussion about the future projects that Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond hopes to accomplish. 8 committees were formed, and many ideas batted around. We then broke up into committee groups to brainstorm and get a start on making these projects a reality. During this interactive session, the problem of tracking memberships was discussed. With over 300 members now, it is too ungainly to keep track of yearly memberships from the exact date each person joined. We all agreed to switch to an annual system, with dues being due by the end of each February for that calendar year. If a person has joined the group after Sept. 1 of the proceeding year, their membership will be extended so that they will be able to wait until the next year comes around to pay their dues. We think this will be a fair system, and also will make administrative tasks much easier. This will take effect immediately, so if you have not paid dues between Sept. 1 and now, your dues are officially due for 2006. These are the 8 committees and their descriptions:
If anyone needs email addresses of the people on their committees, please let me know and I will supply them. Committees: please keep me in the loop by emailing in progress reports on your projects. It was a totally exhilarating day, and we thank everyone for their participation and great ideas. Joan Gand |
