Chicago Architecture Foundation/Chicago Bauhaus & Beyond Members & Guests Trip -
Columbus, Indiana , May 13 & 14, 2006

Join the CAF & CBB for an extraordinary adventure to America’s small town capital of Modernism - Columbus, Indiana. This community of just 37,000 inhabitants about 50 miles south of Indianapolis, is home to a remarkable collection of contemporary buildings designed by many of the leading architects of the 20th century; Eliel and Eero Saarinen, I.M.Pei, Gunnar Birkerts, Cesar Pelli, Richard Meier, Harry Weese, Myron Goldsmith, Robert A.M. Stern, and more. Just as fascinating is the story of how this national treasure grew and developed under the enlightened sponsorship of Irwin Miller, CEO of Cummins Engine and supported by a unique community partnership. Columbus is also home to many historic buildings, some on the National Register. For more information on this special community, see this recent article in the Chicago Tribune: http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/realestate/realestate/chi-0601080309jan08,1,2568581.story

The program begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning May 13 with our departure for a 4 1/2-hour journey to Columbus on a deluxe motor coach. Immediately following check-in at the historic Columbus Inn, 1895, Charles Sparrell, Renovation 1986, Landmarks Design, www.thecolumbusinn.com, the afternoon will be devoted to a guided walking tour of downtown Columbus. Following the afternoon program, participants will return to the Inn. A cocktail reception at the striking Irwin Gardens 1910, Henry Phillips will be followed by a gourmet dinner served at one of Columbus’ fine local restaurants.

Sunday morning, following breakfast at the Columbus Inn, a guided bus tour will review significant architecture outside of the city core. There will be several stops. We will return to the Inn at noon for check-out and lunch prior to our early afternoon departure to Chicago, returning by approximately 6:00 p.m.
